“…something to wear tonight.”»

From time to time, I love sifting through the Short Films section of Vimeo. There are always pieces worthy of attention, that get buried under the clutter of new projects; those are my favorites to uncover.

This morning, I came across the video: “Fifty People, One Question: New Orleans” by Benjamin Reece. The video starts out with the faces of those who are going to tackle the question at hand (a question that, as the audience, you’re oblivious to, until about the video’s half-way point). But this project gave me goosebumps long before the question was uncovered. I recognized the face of a girl. I recognized Annette.

She studied with me in Rome this summer. She sat beside me in my Literary Translation class; the two of us, and just one other student. She was a sweetheart, but we didn’t keep in touch…And I never thought I’d see her face again.

This was precisely the topic of conversation at lunch yesterday…”How many people have I come across in my lifetime already, whom I’ll never see or talk to again? How many paths has mine crossed with, just not joined? And why is it that we realize peoples’ impacts after they’re gone?”

Of all of the videos I could click on, of all of the faces I could come across, and of the handful of people I know living in New Orleans…what are the odds?

Oh…and to answer the video’s question: I’d want my family close…and you too.

Pure.»

I hope that my combining of these four short films into a single post doesn’t devalue any of them in any way, because they’re each absolutely beautiful. They were shot by Leonardi Dalessandri, an Italian cinematographer, I’m assuming, for pure fun.

The colors that come through in each shot are so vivid and so full of life, like the places and faces captured themselves. Each scene, a taste of Italy; the pure place that I call home.
